PUBLISHED FICTION
- First fiction was published in the Sunday Tribune newspaper and nominated for The Sunday Tribune/Hennessy Literary Awards in 1991. She was included in the collection Ireland in Exile, edited by Dermot Bolger (New Island Books) in 1993. Has also had stories published in magazines such as Irish Edition, Hot Press Magazine, Irish Tatler, and the literary review (now defunct) Here’s Me Bus. In 1996, two of her stories appeared in the Australian collection Wee Girls (Spinifex Press).
- In 1997, she featured in the anthology Cabbage and Bones, from Henry Holt, Inc., for which she was nominated for America’s Pushcart Prize. In 1999, her story Surabaya Johnny appeared in Shenanigans and she also had a story in Penguin UK's travel anthology Fortune Hotel. In 2000, her short fiction was published in the Random House anthology Thicker Than Water, and in 2003, in NUIG’s Review of Post-Graduate Studies (ROPES) and Galway’s Crannóg. In 2004, she featured in the Croatian anthology of Irish writing, Otok Gipsanih Svetaca, edited by Stipe Grgas.
- In 2009, She received a Bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland to complete her first novel. In April, her story ‘A Child Called Peace’ was published in the American academic review, Natural Bridge. Her story ‘Mare Rubrum’ was shortlisted for the Francis MacManus Short Story competition. In December, her short story ‘The Biggest Liar In The World’was published in Census 2, an anthology from the Seven Towers Agency in Dublin. In August, she also had a poem, ‘Blue Tarpaulin’ published in The Sunday Tribune as part of the New Irish Writing series, and a second, ‘Dusk’ in October in Galway’s Cránnóg literary review. For the former, she was shortlisted for The Hennessy Awards in the category of emerging poet.
PUBLISHED ESSAYS
- She had a chapter entitled ‘Generation Without Borders: Developments in New Irish Arts 1982-1997’ in Hyperion’s non-fiction book, The Irish America. Other contributors to this publication included Frank McCourt, Mary Higgins Clark, Denis Leary, Maeve Binchy and Jason Robards. She also published 'Film in the Fifth Province,' a paper about Irish film in the United States, in Cinéaste magazine. In 1999, her essay, ‘The Vocabulary of Absence’ was published in a non-fiction anthology of Irish women writers entitled Motherland, from William Morrow and Company. Her essay ‘A Gentle Anarchy’ was published in the literary review, Natural Bridge, from the University of Missouri, U.S.A., in Spring 2009.
JOURNALISM
Helena has been published in a range of magazines and newspapers in Ireland and the United States from The Irish Times to Rolling Stone, and went on to write for several in-house publicatioins for her work at the United Nations. During this time she was Editor-in-Charge of the magazine, "UNMEE News," based in Eritrea and Ethiopia, and then Editor of "Afghan Update," the magazine published by the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan, which was published in three languages. She now stays in print in Ireland with contributions to The Wexford Echo newspaper, and Hot Press magazine. A selection of her journalistic work will be forthcoming on this page.
